Season Care Tips
Staking & Support
June and July are the months of abundant growth in the garden and staking and watering are the two main activities for the gardener at this time. Put stakes and supports in place for tall, herbaceous plants, like peonies and delphiniums. This will prevent them from falling over or look messy as they grow taller and heavy with blooms with the progressing season. Likewise, as climbers display new growth, tie them into position on a support system in order to maintain control and prevent an untidy appearance.
Always have a roll of Gardeners twine around, it’s perfect for tying in plants and vegetables as they grow. Visit our garden shop for gardeners twine. We also have a handy pair of folding secateurs that are strong enough to get through tough roses but small enough to slip in the back pocket so you can always carry them with you.
Watering: Don’t forget to keep up with your watering, especially as the very hot weather sets in. If you don’t water enough, roots will stay near the surface, making them even more prone to the heat. An inch of water a week is a good rule of thumb, so don’t just spritz, water deeply to keep those roots digging deeper.
